DIEL OXYGEN- AND OPTICAL-BASED ASSESSMENT OF MARINE BIOLOGICAL PRODUCTION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA USING BGC-SVP DRIFTERS
Marine primary production fuels ocean food webs and drives the biological carbon pump, yet robust estimates of net ecosystem metabolism remain poorly constrained in many regions. Here we try to address this gap through the first sustained observations of biological production in the Western Mediterranean Sea, collected by an array of eight Biogeochemical Surface Velocity Program (BGC-SVP) drifters, novel Lagrangian platforms that simultaneously measure dissolved oxygen, particulate optical properties, salinity, temperature and wind variables. The BGC-SVP design enables Lagrangian tracking of water masses across timescales from hours to seasons while resolving the horizontal variability from sub-mesoscale to basin scales. We implement a methodological framework to quantify biological production from two separate time series: diel cycles in the particulate backscattering coefficient yield estimates of gross community production (GCP), while dissolved oxygen cycles provide gross oxygen production (GOP) and community respiration (CR). Rates are derived under the assumptions that respiration is constant throughout the day and primary production is a function of light intensity. These first observations from the BGC-SVP drifters demonstrate that these autonomous platforms provide a simple and relatively inexpensive approach to resolve the variability of metabolic rates across multiple scales in the surface layer of the ocean.
