ANALYSIS READY PHOTOSYNTHESIS PARAMETERS DATA

Primary production models require information on the physiological response of phytoplankton to light. Such information is encoded in the photosynthesis parameters, whose values can only be estimated via direct experiments at sea, either under natural light conditions (in situ), or under controlled light conditions (in vitro). Thus far there have been several attempts to gather global data on photosynthesis parameters, typically providing only the estimated parameter values, without the raw data from which the values have been inferred. Here we present novel efforts to collect both in situ and in vitro experimental data as well as the photosynthesis parameter values that are estimated from the data. The data we have gathered falls under two categories: photosynthesis irradiance and photosynthesis depth data. In both categories we estimate photosynthesis parameters and store them alongside the raw data from which they are estimated. Various photosynthesis irradiance formulations are used and comparisons amongst the recovered parameters are presented. The photosynthesis parameters are then categorized into three subsets: parameters estimated using 1) in situ data, 2) in vitro data, and 3) parameters estimated from in situ data from long-term time series stations. A global model versus data comparison is made and codes used to handle the data as well as the methods to estimate the parameters are provided publicly.
