ABSTRACT 1216 | POSTER 118

TURBIDITY IN FTU AS AN INDICATOR OF WATER QUALITY IN THE VISTULA RIVER MOUTH, BALTIC SEA: A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS WITH SATELLITE DATA

Turbidity is one of the key indicators of water quality, resulting from light scattering by suspended particles of both natural and anthropogenic origin. Elevated turbidity levels affect the functioning of marine ecosystems by influencing light conditions, primary production, and organisms at higher trophic levels. In recent years, with the widespread use of multiparameter oceanographic probes, turbidity measurements have become easy to perform in field conditions; however, the interpretation of results expressed in Formazin Turbidity Units (FTU) in marine environments remains insufficiently understood.

The aim of the poster is to present a first attempt to determine the relationship between turbidity measured in FTU and suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration, including its organic and inorganic fractions, in the Vistula River mouth region (the southern Baltic Sea). Additionally, the consistency between in situ measurements and satellite-derived SPM estimates from ESA Sentinel-3 OLCI data processed using the Case 2 Regional Coast Colour (C2RCC) processor is evaluated.

Empirical data were collected during several research cruises aboard the r/v Imoros 2 in the summer season. Measurements were conducted at 24 stations along three transects covering a gradient from nearshore river-influenced waters to the open sea (15–20 km offshore). At all stations, hydrophysical profiling was carried out using a SAIV SD204 probe, recording FTU, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. Water samples were collected at selected stations for SPM analysis.

The results provide a first dataset enabling assessment of FTU–SPM relationships under strong riverine influence and their preliminary interpretation in optically complex Case 2 waters.
