THE PROVOR CTS5: A VERSATILE BGC-ARGO PLATFORM FOR AUTONOMOUS OPTICAL MEASUREMENTS
Since 2012, the BioGeoChemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) mission of the OneArgo program has revolutionized the global-scale acquisition of six key biogeochemical and bio-optical variables throughout the water column. This success stems not only from the strong coordination and support provided by the OneArgo framework but also from the technological maturity of Argo profiling floats, which have proven to be highly efficient autonomous platforms for hosting a wide range of sensors. A new generation of profiling float has been developed since 2011 by nke in collaboration with the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche (LOV). It is designed to host complex sensors, such as the Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP). Since 2022, it has also integrated two deep hyperspectral TriOs-RAMSES radiometers to measure vertical profiles of downwelling irradiance (Ed) and upwelling radiance (Lu).
In this work, we address the advantages and challenges of using this platform for various marine optics activities, from research to operational tasks, particularly for the validation of satellite ocean-color products. After a technical presentation of the float, we highlight its capabilities in terms of programming flexibility and operational deployment at sea. We also demonstrate its ability to host a variety of sensors, complementing radiometric and optical data with additional biogeochemical or imaging measurements. A recent development facilitates the integration of prototype sensors and the testing of complex embedded algorithms, potentially overcoming telemetry limitations. Finally, we discuss the integration of these floats into the OneArgo program, with a focus on leveraging the Argo data infrastructure for the dissemination of float data and metadata.
