ABSTRACT 1212 | POSTER 142

VALIDATION OF REMOTE-SENSING OCEAN COLOR DATA FOR THE ANALYSIS OF WATER TRANSPARENCY IN THE BALTIC SEA

The Baltic Sea is an optically complex basin characterised by high concentrations of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and suspended particulate matter, which are water constituents directly influencing water transparency. Within the frame of the ISOLUME project, we aim to analyse basin-scale trends in water transparency. Optical properties of Baltic Sea waters are derived from extensive in situ measurements, such as inherent and apparent optical properties. To extend this analysis spatially and temporally, we begin by validating remote-sensing products for the basin. We compare surface chlorophyll concentrations and sea surface reflectances from the global OC-CCI product and the regional SatBaltyk project. These are validated against matching in situ data, and we account for their respective uncertainties.

A validated satellite product becomes a powerful tool for assessing large-scale patterns in inherent and apparent optical properties across the Baltic Sea, extending local in situ analyses. We then investigate the temporal evolution of concentrations of optically significant water constituents to identify changes in water transparency. Ultimately, this effort aims to determine to what extent global trends in ocean darkening are visible in the Baltic Sea, while distinguishing between regional variability and long-term patterns and identifying the key optically significant seawater components responsible for these changes.
