RECENT IMPROVEMENTS TO HYPERSPECTRAL ABSORPTION (HYPER-A) AND BACKSCATTERING (HYPER-BB) SENSORS
Absorption and backscattering are critical inherent optical properties (IOPs) that describe how light interacts with water with implications to remote sensing validation, water quality, harmful algal bloom monitoring, and many other areas of research. These properties have been measured in-situ for decades, but with the development and launch (completed and planned) of hyperspectral satellites for ocean color monitoring, new in-situ sensor requirements emerged. These requirements included expanding the spectral range and resolution of in-situ IOP measurements. In response, the Hyper-a and Hyper-bb sensors were developed for measuring hyperspectral absorption and backscattering, respectively.
Here we will present recent improvements to the Hyper-a and Hyper-bb sensors. We will discuss engineering advancements to the sensor designs and measurement methodologies that improve performance (accuracy, reproducibility, reliability), as well as updates to calibration and validation procedures for these sensors. We will present measurements of real-world and simulated samples in the laboratory to demonstrate their individual and complementary measurement capabilities.
