PHYTOPLANKTON OPTICAL TYPES FROM HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING SPECTROSCOPY

Hyperspectral imaging spectroscopy data can be used to solve the inversion problem in terms of phytoplankton optical types and other water constituents.

Although machine learning approaches are fast in their application and allow the inversion of large datasets of hyperspectral imaging spectroscopy data, their training process is the critical step which is both complex and time-consuming. Our prototypes for algae group detection relied on remote sensing reflectance extracts from both EnMAP and PACE, which were sampled according to optical water types (OWT). These spectra were fitted with a bio-optical model to create both smoothed spectra and a solution concerning the phytoplankton concentrations. Although the modelled training data can be used across sensors, there needs to be a step to translate the satellite spectra into the model world. With each change in the atmospheric correction this translation must be reevaluated.

With the latest implementation of the bio_optics package, the direct inversion with the bio-optical model becomes available for the application on satellite data itself, possibly replacing the machine learning approach entirely.

We present inversion results from different study areas like North Sea and Baltic Sea (EnMAP, PACE, CHIME-like, project EnsAD and HEATWISE) and rivers Oder and Elbe (EnMAP, CHIME-like, project AQUATIME) and demonstrate how this enables us to distinguish between optical phytoplankton groups in diverse water bodies.
