A HIGH-SPATIAL-RESOLUTION (4KM) AIR-SEA CO2 FLUXES PRODUCT FOR GLOBAL COASTAL WATER OVER 1998-2020 PERIOD

The CO2COAST project provides the highest spatial-resolution (4km) daily images of pCO2 water and air-sea CO2 flux in global coastal water from 1998 to 2020. Our coastal mask extends 200 km from shorelines, excluding areas with traces of ice. In this study, we present our monthly flux product in comparison with two others that were developed for global (Chau et al., 2022) and coastal (Roobaert et al., 2024) waters. Our CO2 flux agrees well with the latter, but not as much with the former one. Particularly, differences in flux direction are observed at latitudes higher than 50°N, and the underlying causes are discussed. Additionally, we analyzed the impact of different wind-based k parameterization methods on flux calculation across different wind and latitudinal ranges, leading to the selection of the Wanninkhof (2014) method. The impact of k method is smaller with moderate wind or over the tropical region. The global coastal water on average from 1998 to 2020 is a net sink of CO2 at -0.19 PgC yr−1, which is in good agreement with other studies. Strongest sink rates are mostly observed in latitudes higher than 50°N and around the 50°S latitude, maintaining a coastal uptake rate of at least 2 molC.m-2.y-1 on average throughout the year. In contrast, the tropical zone (30°S–30°N) is a net CO2 source to the atmosphere, with an absolute rate of less than half that of the high latitude sink. Finally, uncertainties in the flux estimates are quantified analytically from input data’s uncertainties.
