ROUTINE RADIOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS ABOARD GERMAN RESEARCH VESSELS

Coastal waters are highly productive and support important activities, such as tourism, fishing, and transportation. Therefore, monitoring these waters is crucial. Remote sensing reflectance from near-surface or satellite instruments is commonly used to evaluate water quality, including levels of chlorophyll-a and suspended particles. Hyperspectral data even offer the potential to characterize the phytoplankton community. However, satellite remote sensing requires extensive reference data sets to capture the diverse bio-optical conditions of coastal waters. Campaigns dedicated to collecting such reference data are expensive and their success depends on the weather. Permanently installed measurement systems on research vessels can operate autonomously and generate large amounts of data while the vessel is in operation. These systems are more likely to measure frequently during good weather conditions. Here, we present a data management concept for hyperspetcral radiometric data collected aboard the German research vessel Heincke that ensures high data quality despite autonomous collection. We demonstrate the data workflow for the installed TriOS setup from collection and near-real-time transfer to processing using the community processor HyperCP and publication in PANGAEA and SeaBASS. Quality assurance is also addressed. Through a full radiometric characterization of the sensors, we aim to provide remote sensing reflectance with uncertainties as an essential ocean variable. We encourage scientists and space agencies to use these publicly available, high-quality datasets for their applications.
