INTEGRATED MICRO-SENSOR OBSERVATORIES FOR HIGH-FREQUENCY MONITORING OF WATER QUALITY: COMBINED PASSIVE RADIOMETRY AND FLUORESCENCE LIDAR APPROACH
Monitoring water quality in continental and coastal environments requires high-frequency, spatially distributed observations that are not achievable with traditional sampling or standalone sensing approaches. Designed in the framework of OQOMETHI project (supported by ADEME, France 2030 Program, consortium with VorteX-io and Magellium), a multi-scale observational concept is being developed based on compact, autonomous micro-sensor systems combining passive and active optical measurements. The proposed solution integrates two complementary instruments: a micro-hyperspectral radiometer (mHR.2) for above-water radiometry and a compact fluorescence LiDAR (mFL.12) for active sensing. This dual approach enables simultaneous acquisition of the remote sensing reflectance and fluorescence signatures associated with phytoplankton pigments, dissolved organic matter, suspended particles, and dissolved hydrocarbons. The systems are designed for continuous autonomous operation separately, or integration into distributed micro-observatories (VorteX-io), providing high-frequency data streams suitable both for operational monitoring and for the collection of ground-truth datasets required for calibration and validation of high-resolution satellite products for inland waters, including Sentinel-2 and hyperspectral missions such as PRISMA, EnMAP, and CHIME. Initial tests of the system concept were conducted under controlled conditions, followed by the first operational deployments in France at three sites, including Lake Parentis, the Dordogne estuary, and Étang des Aulnes (in collaboration with Office français de la biodiversité) for continuous measurements acquired at 30-minute intervals. The proposed architecture represents a scalable solution for the deployment of dense monitoring networks, addressing current gaps in water quality observations and supporting the development of reliable satellite-derived products through systematic in situ measurements.
