ABSTRACT 1279 | POSTER 191
A GLOBAL 3D DATA PRODUCT OF PHYTOPLANKTON FUNCTIONAL TYPES DERIVED FROM MACHINE LEARNING
Leveraging the synoptic view provided by satellite ocean color and altimetry, combined with vertically resolved BGC-Argo observations, we previously developed SOCA, a neural network-based method. This approach enabled us to construct a global tridimensional (3D) biogeochemical data product, now distributed via the Copernicus Marine Service (MULTIOBS_GLO_BIO_BGC_3D_REP_015_010). The product provides depth-resolved chlorophyll a concentration (Chla), particulate backscattering coefficient (bbp), and radiative variables, including downwelling photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) and spectral irradiance (Ed) at 380, 412, and 490 nm, at 0.25° spatial resolution from the surface to 1000 m depth, covering 25 years (1998–2023).
Here, we present an extension of the SOCA product to include phytoplankton functional types (PFTs), expressed as the contribution of pico-, nano-, and microphytoplankton to total Chla. We derive vertically resolved PFTs by combining the SOCA Chla product with a global phytoplankton pigment database and satellite observations. Validation against independent in situ pigment datasets from multiple oceanographic cruises shows consistent performance across diverse biogeochemical regimes. This product offers new quantitative insights into the vertical distribution of phytoplankton communities in the global open ocean, supporting various applications from ecosystem monitoring, carbon cycle studies, and biogeochemical modeling.
