RETRIEVAL OF PARTICULATE ORGANIC CARBON IN THE ARABIAN SEA USING OCEAN COLOR OBSERVATIONS
Accurate estimation of particulate organic carbon (POC) from satellite ocean color data is important for understanding marine biogeochemical variability, but remains difficult in regions such as the Arabian Sea because of strong seasonal and monsoon variability. In this study, a regionally tuned Maximum Band Ratio (MBR)-based relationship was developed for estimating surface POC in the Arabian Sea using satellite-derived remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) and in situ POC observations. The relationship was derived after quality control and outlier removal using an empirical relationship between log-transformed POC and MBR values.
Monthly climatological POC distributions were generated using Level-3 monthly climatology Rrs products over the Arabian Sea (0-30 N, 40-80 E). The derived relationship captured the major seasonal features of the basin, including higher POC concentrations during the southwest monsoon period and enhanced coastal values associated with productive and upwelling regions. The results were compared with the Stramski et al. (2022) POC model to examine regional differences between the two approaches. Both models showed similar large-scale seasonal patterns, but the regional relationship produced relatively higher POC values in coastal and monsoon-influenced regions, while smaller differences were observed in offshore waters. Percentage differences between the two approaches were generally within approximately -30% to +45%, with larger differences mainly observed in productive coastal regions. The study shows that regional tuning of satellite-based POC relationships can improve the representation of Arabian Sea biogeochemical variability and highlights the usefulness of satellite ocean color observations for regional POC studies.
