PACE VALIDATION: IN SITU AOP DATA REQUIREMENTS AND RESULTS
Ocean color satellite missions require a detailed and thorough validation process; from data collection processes following community practices, instrument calibration and characterization for accurate retrievals and uncertainty estimates, to standardized data processing and documentation, with complete error characterization on the measurements. Within the validation strategies for PACE, the in-situ radiometry workflow has significantly evolved to support the specific requirements of this mission. A review of our validation process is presented in this work.
In situ AOP’s are a robust measurement for satellite validation, but it also presents its challenges. For the requirements of this mission, we have developed a standardized processing software to process in-situ AOP, Visual SeaBASS, that generates products for validation matchups including uncertainty estimates. An overview of the AOP processing steps is also presented in this work.
Lastly, we present results and QA/QC metrics used for validation matchups from the extensive PACE Validation Science Team data, with results from Visual SeaBASS and other AOP processors. We evaluated differences in processing methodologies and results in remote sensing reflectance. The different processing methodologies lead to up to 20% differences in Rrs calculations in the red region of the spectrum. Uncertainty estimates on Rrs are also presented from these different methodologies.
