MULTISPECTRAL AND HYPERSPECTRAL REMOTE SENSING OF PHYTOPLANKTON FUNCTIONAL TYPES
Marine phytoplankton contribute over 50% of global oxygen production and carbon sequestration, serving as a cornerstone of Earth’s habitability. Changes in their community structure profoundly affect carbon sinks, food webs, and biogeochemical cycles, making them critically important to ocean health. Global warming has accelerated shifts in phytoplankton community distribution, threatening ecosystem stability. However, in situ observation data remain severely limited, making remote sensing a key approach for monitoring these global-scale changes. This study focuses on satellite-based remote sensing of variations in the distribution of phytoplankton functional types (PFTs). By systematically integrating in situ measurements, multi-source ocean-color satellite data, and marine ecological datasets, and incorporating artificial intelligence techniques, we developed key methodologies including multi-model ensemble retrieval, hyperspectral modeling, and the construction of long-term time-series data products. These advances have enabled quantification and monitoring of PFTs at the global scale.
