DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW HYPERSPECTRAL TRANSMISSOMETER

Attenuation is an inherent optical property (IOP) that, along with absorption and scattering, describes how light interacts with water and its constituents. Measurements of attenuation are critical to understanding the constituents of water (e.g., particles, dissolved material) and how they influence the underwater light field, with far-reaching impacts on underwater visibility and above water remote sensing reflectance measured by ocean color satellites. This property is typically measured with a beam transmissometer (or beam attenuation sensor) operating at one or many wavelengths in the visible to near-infrared spectrum. However, with the recent launch of NASA’s PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite and the planned launch of new hyperspectral remote sensing satellites by other agencies, there is a growing need to expand upon the spectral range and resolution of previous transmissometers to meet the validation requirements of these state-of-the-art missions.

Here we will present recent developments related to a new submersible hyperspectral transmissometer for measuring beam attenuation from ultraviolet to near infrared wavelengths. We will discuss details of the optomechanical design and measurement routine, as well as experimental work demonstrating sensor accuracy, stability, and sensitivity. Additionally, we will explore the potential to make complementary inelastic scattering measurements with the sensor to expand its utility. Finally, we will present results from intercomparison studies with other beam transmissometers.
