ENSURING INTEROPERABILITY OF BGC-ARGO CHLOROPHYLL OBSERVATIONS THROUGH FLUOROMETER INTERCOMPARISON
Over the last decade, the Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) program has transformed our ability to monitor and characterize global ocean biogeochemistry. This capability relies, among others, on chlorophyll fluorescence sensors mounted on profiling floats, from which chlorophyll a concentration (FChla) is derived as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. Since the beginning of the program, most floats have been equipped with a single type of fluorometer (SeaBird ECO-V1). More recently, new sensors from alternative manufacturers have become available for deployment (e.g. RBRtridente). While this diversification is beneficial, it will raise challenges for maintaining the interoperability of the BGC-Argo FChla dataset. Although based on similar principles, fluorometers differ in optical specifications, potentially leading to significant discrepancies in fluorescence response and derived FChla. We conducted intercomparisons between two fluorometers (ECO-V1 and RBRtridente) under a range of conditions, using HPLC-determined chlorophyll as a reference. Sensors were evaluated in laboratory experiments with monospecific phytoplankton cultures and during CTD-rosette casts across contrasting oceanic environments. Results indicate consistent behavior between ECO-V1 and RBRtridente across test conditions, with a relatively constant ratio between their respective FChla values. This supports the possibility of defining an interoperability factor to ensure the consistency of the BGC-Argo FChla dataset. Continued validation is nevertheless required, including deployments during cruises with concomitant HPLC measurements and multi-sensor float configurations, to ensure long-term consistency and data quality across varying conditions. Such an approach provides a framework for incorporating future sensor technologies while preserving consistency.
