CONTRASTED TRAJECTORIES OF BRAZILIAN COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS REVEALED BY 20 YEARS OF MODIS OCEAN COLOUR OBSERVATIONS
Understanding the long-term responses of coastal ecosystems to increasing anthropogenic pressures remains a major challenge, particularly in optically complex waters where standard satellite products often fail. Here, we analyse more than two decades of MODIS ocean-colour observations processed with the chlorophyll-a CONNECT algorithm, specifically designed for such environments, to investigate trends across three contrasted Brazilian coastal systems: Sepetiba Bay, Guanabara Bay, and Araruama Lagoon. By combining satellite-derived chlorophyll-a variability with indicators of urban expansion and documented human interventions, we reveal distinct ecosystem trajectories. Sepetiba Bay exhibits a sustained increase in phytoplankton biomass (+2.85% yr–1), associated with ongoing industrial and port activities, consistent with progressive eutrophication. In contrast, Guanabara Bay shows a significant decline (−1.07% yr–1) following major remediation efforts, highlighting the effectiveness of environmental policies despite continued urban pressure. Araruama Lagoon displays a marked decrease (−3.23% yr–1) after a period of intense ecological disturbance, underscoring the high sensitivity of confined systems and their rapid response to mitigation measures. Together, these results demonstrate the need of consistent long-term satellite observations to provide new insights into the impacts of anthropogenic pressures/coastal management on coastal water quality evolution.
