SUPPORTING NEAR-REAL-TIME WATER-QUALITY MONITORING VIA STREAM
The Satellite-based analysis Tool for Rapid Evaluation of Aquatic EnvironMents (STREAM) delivers high precision near real time water quality maps derived from Landsat-8/9 and Sentinel-2 imagery. Leveraging various NASA-supported R&D efforts, STREAM combines cutting-edge, rigorously validated water quality estimation with an easy-to-use, responsive web interface and RESTful API. The processing engine of STREAM is enabled by a machine-learning processing chain (including atmospheric correction and in-water retrievals) to approximate water quality indicators, such as water transparency and concentrations of chlorophyll-a and total suspended solids. The web interface allows end-users to visualize mosaicked water quality maps, identify pixel values at a glance, download full resolution product maps, and create point-based timeseries of archival data on the fly. STREAM already enables low-latency (< 6 hours) detection of anomalous water-quality conditions. Operating since June 2024, STREAM operates daily for Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8/9 coverage over the entire U.S. and is soon expected to cover PACE globally. Additionally, a RESTful API allows users to request product maps directly or query for more information. The system is open to the public (https://ladsweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/stream/) and will continue to expand spatial, temporal, and satellite coverage as capable.
