ENHANCING OCEAN COLOUR CLIMATE RECORDS WITH OC CCI VERSION 7

The Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) is preparing its Version 7 product. It incorporates significant improvements to climate-quality ocean colour records through improved validation and algorithmic innovation. Central to this effort is the compilation of an expanded global in situ bio-optical dataset (v2026), increasing total observations by ~115% (from 148k to 319k), with chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) records growing by ~31%, remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) by ~94%, and inherent optical properties (IOPs) increasing by ~80% up to ~10,000%. Bidirectional correction of Rrs now uses the Park and Ruddick (2005) scheme (replacing Morel et al., 2002), improving consistency with satellite data and Polymer atmospheric correction. The dataset supports validation and algorithm development, with a v2026 data paper in preparation. This version integrates the latest sensors’ Level-1 reprocessing and updates system vicarious calibration (SVC) gains at MOBY, leading to performance improvements, particularly for MERIS and OLCI sensors. VIIRS-NOAA20 will be included alongside the existing six missions (SeaWiFS, MODIS-Aqua, MERIS, VIIRS-SNPP, OLCI-A, OLCI-B). The temporal inclusion of MODIS-Aqua data in the merged product is being assessed due to its recent orbital drift. As in previous versions, the OC-CCI product will include pixel-wise optical water classification using fuzzy C-means clustering, which enables dynamic selection and assignment of algorithms across distinct water regimes. In version 7, this classification will be updated, enhancing product reliability at global scale. A community round-robin involving 16 participants produced 13 algorithms for retrieving Chl-a, IOPs, and diffuse attenuation. This provides a robust benchmark for intercomparison, reproducibility, and algorithm selection in OC-CCI Version 7.
